Overview

Kilimanjaro is the world’s highest free-standing mountain and one of the few great summits that needs no technical climbing. You walk through five climate zones, from rainforest to arctic summit, in about a week.

Choosing the right route and giving yourself enough days are the two biggest things you can do to reach the top. We usually recommend the 7-day Machame route or the 8-day Lemosho route.

Highlights

  • Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m
  • Five climate zones in one week
  • Glaciers and sunrise above the clouds
  • No technical climbing needed

Seasons

Dry season (June–October)

Clear skies and cold nights. The busiest time on the mountain.

January–March

Warmer and quieter, with a chance of snow on top.

Rainy months (April–May, November)

Wet and quiet. Possible, but not our first choice.
