Northern safari circuit

Overview

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera, about 20 kilometres across. Its grassy floor, soda lake and small forests hold one of the densest populations of animals in Africa.

A half day or a full day on the crater floor is enough for most visitors. We go down early, when the light is soft and the vehicles are few, and have a picnic by the hippo pool.

Highlights

  • One of the best places in Tanzania to see black rhino
  • Lions, buffalo, hippos and flamingos in one day
  • Views from the crater rim
  • Maasai villages in the highlands

Seasons

Dry season (June–October)

Golden grass and easy viewing. Cool mornings on the rim.

Green season (November–May)

Green floor, flamingos on the lake and fewer visitors.
