Soft bags, neutral colours and a warm layer: our simple packing list for a comfortable safari.
You need less than you think. Most safaris include small flights or a shared luggage space in the vehicle, so pack light and choose soft bags rather than hard suitcases.
Clothes
- Light, breathable clothes in khaki, green, beige or brown
- A warm fleece or jacket — early mornings and the Ngorongoro rim are cold
- Long sleeves and trousers for the evenings (mosquitoes)
- A hat with a brim, and sunglasses
- Comfortable closed shoes and a pair of sandals
- Swimwear if your lodge has a pool, or for Zanzibar
Avoid
Dark blue and black attract tsetse flies in some parks, and bright white shows the dust quickly. Camouflage clothing is not allowed in Tanzania.
Useful extras
- Binoculars — one pair per person if you can
- Camera with a zoom lens, spare batteries and memory cards
- Sunscreen, lip balm and insect repellent
- A small torch or head torch
- Your own medicines and a copy of your travel insurance
Charging and money
Our vehicles have charging points, and most lodges have power in the rooms. Bring some US dollars in small, newer notes for tips and small purchases.
