A simple month-by-month guide to safaris, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar — and why there is no bad time to come.
Guests often ask us when they should come. The honest answer: Tanzania is good all year, but each season gives you something different. Here is how we explain it.
June to October: the dry season
This is the classic safari season. The grass is short, rivers and waterholes shrink and animals gather where you can see them. Days are sunny and nights on the crater rim are cool. It is also the busiest and most expensive time, so book early — especially for July and August.
November and December: the short rains
Short afternoon showers turn the plains green again. Mornings are usually clear, the parks are quieter and prices start to drop. Birdwatching is excellent as migrant birds arrive from Europe and Asia.
January to March: calving season
The wildebeest herds gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and give birth — thousands of calves in a few weeks. Lions, cheetahs and hyenas are never far away. It is warm and mostly dry, and a lovely time for Zanzibar too.
April and May: the green season
This is when the long rains fall. Some roads get muddy and a few camps close, but the parks are empty, the landscapes are beautiful and prices are at their lowest. If you do not mind a little rain, it can be a great-value time to travel.
What about Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar?
For Kilimanjaro, the driest months are January to mid-March and June to October. On Zanzibar, June to October and December to February are the best beach months; April and May are the wettest.
